Oily skin is characterized by a mid day shine, large pores and of course frequent breakouts…below is a regimen constructed just for oily skin.
When choosing products for oily skin, be sure to use products that are oil free and have an agent that removes EXCESS oil from the skin. Use such products in moderation as not to strip too much oil from your skin which will result in over production of oil.
Cleansing (2x/day): MORNING: Oil Free Cleanser or Clay Based Cleanser (based on the severity of your oiliness). (recommendations: Shiseido Fitit Naturgo White Clay Face Wash, Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser, Clean and Clear Facial Cleanser)NIGHT: Makeup Remover,if you wear makeup. (recommendation: Clinque Take the Day off Remover, Beauty Without Cruelty Makeup Remover, various makeup remover wipes) followed by a gentle cleansing using a gentle facial wash (Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser, Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser)
Exfoliation (2x/week): Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Remember not to scrub too hard or you may damage the skin. You can a chemical or a mechanical peel. My favorite (I am a dermalogica junkie) is Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. Daily Microfoliant is a rice based enzyme powder that is activated by water and releases Papain (enzyme present in papaya), Salicylic Acid and Reice enzymes to smooth the skin and increase the cell renewal process.
Masking (2x/week): Use a mint or clay mask to remove excess oil from the skin. Follow the directions on the skin. If the tingle is too much, remove the mask and proceed with a mask for sensitive skin. AVOID moisturizing mask at all cost.
Toning: Tone after each face wash. Toning is a fundamental part of your face cleansing process because it rebalances the pH (5.5) level of your skin after you cleanse it before moisturizing. REalize the difference in toner (alcohol free) and astringent (up to 20% alcohol). I recommend Neutrogena Alcohol Free Toner. Place toner in spray bottle and spritz face, pat toner in face and prepare to mosturize.
Moisturize: Use a light, oil free moisturizer in the morning and evening. This step is essential as it provides the moisture that has been stripped out of the skin so that the skin does not over produce oil. My favorite is Philosophy Hope In A Jar Oil Free; however, you can find several oil free products in the aisles of your local drug store.
