Ask Trecie: Shouldn't My Experience and Expertise be the Thing People Base Decisions Off Of?

Question: I see you post that first impressions determine if people will conduct business with me in most cases, but shouldn't my experience and expertise be the determining factor? How fair is it that people base it off of how I dress?

Answer: I agree, but it's not the way we operate as humans. Naturally we are drawn to those things, and people, that are aesthetically pleasing to us.Take a product on the store shelf for instance.  For every top brand, there is a store brand equal; however, more often than not, the lower costing store brand is over looked because the packaging isn't eye catching. The same concept is applied to those that we come into contact with in our every day lives. In order to garner attention, you must dress the part to be perceived as an expert and/or professional. You have to look the part in order to first gain their attention. If on your first visit to the doctor he/she walked in in some sweats, a cut off top and a ball cap would you stay for your exam or would you question the qualifications and professionalism of the doctor?

It's not about wearing high end brands....it's about presenting yourself in a way that naturally captures and retains the attention of potential clients, followers, listeners, etc. One the attention is captured that is when you work on retaining them for repeat business, likes, listens, etc. Personal branding and self packaging is a vital component to success today!
