As summer fades into fall there are necessary adjustments to your skincare regimens and routines that MUST take place.
During the summer months our skin is oily and dewy because of the humidity in the air; however, during the fall and winter months, our skin becomes drier due to the lack of moisture in the air. For these reasons it is important that you supplement products that aide in moisturizing the skin. I recommend giving yourself a facial 1-2 times per week and to receive a professional treatment once a month. Below are the steps to an amazing personal facial! Beside each step is my recommendation for how often you should perform it!
The Breakdown:
Cleansing (Frequency: Daily; 1x-AM; 2x-PM. The first cleanse at night removes makeup and debris, the second cleanse actually cleanses the skin): During the summer months the main goal during cleansing is to remove as much surface oil as possible without overdrying the skin in an effort to keep the 'super shiny' look at bay. For Fall, you want to focus on using a more gentle cleanser with a creamier texture. A gentle cleanser removes surface dirt and debris without stripping too much of the moisture. If you have oily skin, it is okay to use a foaming cleanser to remove excess oil, but be mindful and cautious as not to over strip the skin. If your skin feels taut after cleansing, you may have stripped too much oil, this will cause your skin to over produce sebum and oil in an effort to rehydrate itself.....HELLLLLLO Crisco face! ;) My favorite gentle cleanser for all skin types is Cetaphil, they have something for EVERY skin type! Note: Try to find a cleanser that is pH balancing...if it is not, remember to use a toner suited for your skin after cleansing to restore the acidic balance to your skin!
Exfoliation (Frequency: 1-2 times per week): Dry skin is REAL in the fall! Exfoliation is a must. I recommend 1-2 times a week depending on the skin type and skin texture. Most people feel like the more abrasive the exfoliant the better....I, myself, prefer an enzyme based exfoliant! While many are rice based, an enzyme exfoliant allows you to apply the product and have it work for you! I use Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant and let it sit on my face 5-7 minutes per use!
Mask(Frequency: 1-2 times per week): Find a mask that is moisturizing while combating your problem areas. I have oily skin that is sometimes dehydrated (lacking water, view post on dehydrated vs. dry skin here) so I use a clay mask in my oily areas and a gel mask in my dehydrated areas. The products I use are Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask and Dermalogica's Colloidal Masque Base. If you are dry, I would recommend a creamy, moisturizing mask...I recommend Burt's Bees Intense Hydration Mask.
Moisturizing (Frequency:Daily; 1x-AM; 1x-PM): It is during this step that I apply all eye creams, serums and my actual moisturizer! Regardless of the season I make sure my day products have SPF in them to protect my skin from UV rays. My night time moisturizing routine includes a heavier lotion so that my skin gets a good dose of moisturizer while I sleep! Supple skin is always nice! All my products in my Moisturizing step come from Murad! Eye Cream: Day: Instant Radiance Eye Cream Night: Renewing Eye Cream. Serums: Day: Advanced Active Radiance Serum Night: Complete Reform Anti Aging Serum. Moisturizer: Day: Oil Control Mattifier SPF 15 Night: Hydro Dynamic Moisture .
These are my steps to healthy skin during the fall and winter season! Don't forget your lip balm to prevent lip chapping from the wind and dry air! I will be posting my top 10 beauty and skincare musthaves for this season this week as well!
